New inventive device for colorectal cancer screening
The faeces of people reveals a lot about their health and thus plays an important role in the early identification of diseases, including colorectal cancer. The current method for collecting faeces is, however, extremely patient-unfriendly. It also entails several health risks and the results are not always reliable. The FECOTAINER (feces collector) is very user-friendly and provides the most reliable faeces collection method for stool testing.
Background
The current standard method of feces collection (or stool collection) is, however, very patient-unfriendly: once the feces / faeces / stool has been collected using a pan, bucket, chamber pot, bin liner or newspaper, the patient must place part of it in a plastic receptacle. The receptacle regularly becomes contaminated in the process so that the health of lab technicians is put at risk (and the decision may be made not to process the stool sample further). Because the threshold to participate in a screening program is high, a certain proportion of patients do not participate in colorectal cancer screening programs.
FECOTAINER: a patented fecescollector
To solve this problem, Excretas Medical has developed the FECOTAINER: a disposable feces collector that is simply placed under the toilet seat ‘before use’ and can be well sealed with a stopper and lid ‘after use’, and then sent hygienically to a laboratory. Colorectal cancer screening
To accede to a recent call by the European Commission to perform more preventive research into cancer, in the case of colorectal cancer – the second most deadly form of cancer in Europe – more iFOBTs (immunochemical Fecal Occult Blood Tests) will have to be performed. The results of such tests can lead to the early identification of colorectal cancer and thus significantly increase the chances of recovery (90%, source: Dutch Cancer Society, Colon Cancer Brochure). Because of the patient-friendliness of the FECOTAINER, the participation of a (population) screening will thus increase and provide potential health profits.
